Modern Art

Anonymous' Null and Void (Sister pieces with very little content) (Dec 06)

If the search for bad artwork reveals nothing, why not put up a notice beside that?
The maths department, despite carrying off the prize for Worst Paintings on Campus, scores but little when it comes to sheer quantity, and so I have been twiddling my thumbs (and even doing some maths) recently, having found nothing worthy of my covert alterations.  Just recently, however, I came across an opportunity previously overlooked - two patches of wall clearly intended for an artwork, but lacking said work.  Whether the piece had been removed due to low quality (unlikely, based on what they kept) or it simply hasn't arrived yet is unclear, but there are wall-hangings and the traditional perspex notice holder (though devoid of notice).  This un-noteworthy state of affairs occurs near the stairs on the first floor, and is duplicated in a similar position on the floor above.  I, therefore, after much deliberation, settled on the installation of my own descriptions of the innovative pieces Null and Void.

To a seasoned professional like me, installation was relatively straightforward.  The inserts were cut to size in-situ during lulls in human traffic, and in between I resorted to elaborate trickery like a fake phonecall or the studious study of notes which concealed 'neath their harmless mathematical exterior a stanley knife and a sheet of perspex.  With the standard layout and University web address, they look as real as one could wish, and I'll be interested to find out how long it takes before an art critic takes them seriously and makes a bundle selling the art world's answer to The Emperor's New Clothes.

My description of the first patch of blank wall

A similar offering, entitled Void was posted beside the vacant space on the floor below.

Update:

Returning in January 07 from the Christmas break, I discovered that the blank wall spaces have been filled with posters that resemble the kind of thing Magic Eye churns out by the bucketload, only without the clever hidden picture:
No longer Null No longer Void

Oh, and they removed my descriptors, but have failed to add any of their own.  Some people have no respect for real art.  Maybe I can exploit their lack of promptness...
